A Life Transformed - Etty Hillesum 1914-1943

 

In 1943, as she was being transported to Auschwitz, Etty Hillesum threw from the window of the train a postcard upon which were written the words: "We left the camp singing". In the previous two years Etty had embarked upon a journey of self-discovery in which she moved from the first stirrings of awekening to discovering that deepest part of herself which she came to call "God" - The Mystic within hereself. In these days of silence, we will reflect upon the writings of this young woman and allow her story with its longings, awakenings and movements towards transformation to touch the mystic within us. As she sought to be true to her own spontaneity, her own thoughts, feelings and experiences "and in the fullest sense of the word, to be true to God..." what is called forth in our own hearts and what does this mean for us?
